    簡要記述(英):The spin Hall effect has been one of the most significant source for the spin-orbit torques. Combing the first-principles electronic band structures calculations and linear response theory, Dr. Hsin Lin in the Institute of Physics and his international collaborators discovered a new type of spin Hall effect, called planar spin Hall effect, in 2D materials with low crystalline symmetry. The planar spin Hall effect can host pure spin current with its spin-polarization parallel to the external charge current. Their findings were published in Nature Materials in March, 2020.

    簡要記述(英):Combining the first-principles electronic band structures calculations and topological band theory, Dr. Hsin Lin of Institute of Physics and his collaborators found the nonmagnetic chiral crystals generally host Weyl fermions on the time-reversal-invariant points in the reciprocal lattice when the spin-orbit coupling is present. Since Nonmagnetic chiral crystals preserve the time-reversal symmetry, according to Kramers theorem, the spin up and down electronic states have to be degenerate on the time-reversal-invariant points. The quasiparticles around the degeneracy obey Weyl equations, and these new type of fermions are termed Kramers-Weyl fermions. This work has been published in Nature Materials 17, 978, (2018).
