SQUID Magnetometer

SQUID Magnetometer

The Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) is very sensitive to magnetic field. By utilizing SQUID technology, the SQUID magnetometer can achieve superior measurement sensitivity. For the SQUID magnetometers manufactured by Quantum Design Corporation, the standard deviation of measurement can achieve about 10-8 emu with Reciprocating Sample Option (RSO) and about 10-7 emu with traditional stepped-scan technique.

The newest model manufactured by Quantum Design Corporation now is the SQUID VSM Magnetometer. The combination of SQUID and VSM technology provides superior sensitivity and fast measurement. The standard deviation of measurement can achieve 1’10-8 emu in the newest SQUID VSM Magnetometer. It is worth mentioning that the SQUID VSM Magnetometer in the Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, is the first installed one in the world.

In our laboratory, the SQUID magnetometer and the SQUID VSM magnetometer can help us to study the nano magnetic properties, the nano superconducting properties, enhancement of critical current in superconducting films by adding another phase as pinning centers, and flux dynamics in superconducting samples. They can also help us to analyze the sample to improve the sample quality. For example, we can know the superconducting critical temperature and the superconducting ratio of samples. With the information, we can try to tune the sample preparation parameter to improve the sample quality.
