Isolation and cryopreservation of human umbilical cord matrix stem cells (Collaborator: Dr. Wei-Hua Chen)

The keystone of regenerative medicine is stem cell. Adult stem cells are good sources for cell transplantation because of less ethic concerns. Umbilical cords, like bone marrows, contain both hematopoietic & mesenchymal stem cells. The Wharton’s jelly of the umbilical cord is rich in mesenchymal stem cells and gains interest in recent years. These cells resemble stem cells from several other sources but also have unique properties, such as noninvasive collection following delivery, plenty cell number, and young adult stem cells. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop a high-yield harvest protocol for human umbilical cord matrix stem (hUCMS) cells. These hUCMS cells from different passages will be further characterized by surface markers, karyotyes, differentiation capabilities, gene and protein expression profiles.
