Abstract:

Modern large-scale accelerator-based light sources, in particular synchrotrons such as the Taiwan Photon Source, have enabled major scientific discoveries over the last few decades.  In this lecture, I will first give an introduction to the sources and recent advances in source development then use examples from physics, chemistry, materials science, and biology to earth and environmental sciences to illustrate the impact of light sources on basic science and technological problems facing the society today.
