Preface of the Proceedings    [ Physica A 321 (2003) ]

      The Sixth Taiwan International Symposium on Statistical Physics: Lattice Model and Complex System (StatPhys-Taiwan-2002) was held at the Academia Sinica (Taipei) from 26 May–29 May 2002 and the Hui-Sun Forest Area of the National Chung Hsing University (Taichung) from 30 May–1 June 2002. StatPhys-Taiwan-2002 continues the tradition of previous meetings in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, and 1999. The proceedings of 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, and 1999 meetings were published in AIP Conference Proceedings 248, Physica A Vol. 205 (1994), Physica A Vol. 221 (1995), Physica A Vol. 254 (1998), and Physica A Vol. 281 (2000), respectively. This meeting was organized in honor of Professor Fa-Yueh Wu on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

     In the opening section of StatPhys-Taiwan-2002 at Institute of Physics of Academia Sinica (Taipei) on 27 May, Professor Ovid J.L. Tzeng, Vice President of Academia Sinica, and Dr. Sai-Ping Li, Vice Director of Institute of Physics of Academia Sinica delivered speeches to welcome the participants who came from Armenia, Australia, Canada, China, Germany, France, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, The Netherlands, UK, USA, Uzbekistan and Taiwan. After three days of scientific activities at Institute of Physics of Academia Sinica (Taipei), on 30 May, participants moved to the Hui-Sun Forest Area of the National Chung Hsing University (Taichung) after brief visits at Chu-Shi Temple, Chi Chang Yuan, and National Tsing Hua University (Hsinchu). The scientific activities at Hui-Sun Forest Area began in the evening of 30 May and ended in the evening of 31 May. On 1 June, tour buses took participants for a visit of the Sun Moon Lake, or to CKS Taipei International Airport or to Taipei City.

      This volume contains most of the invited papers and some contributed papers presented at StatPhys-Taiwan-2002, which brought together contributors and participants from communities of physics, mathematics, chemistry, biological and social sciences. Since StatPhys-Taiwan-2002 was organized to honor Professor Fa-Yueh Wu on the occasion of his 70th birthday, we include his curriculum vitae in this proceedings, which contains a list of his selected publications. A complete list of his publications till the summer of 2002 can be found in a paper by J.-M. Maillard, which was published in Chinese Journal of Physics (Taipei), Vol. 40, 327–378 (2002).
