From Supernova Explosion to Newborn Remnant: Following the Ejecta for Three Years

Abstract

Core-collapse supernovae mark the explosive deaths of massive stars and are responsible for producing and dispersing many of the elements found throughout the Universe. Observations of supernovae and their remnants show that these explosions are far from spherical: the ejecta are strongly mixed and contain large-scale asymmetries, clumps, and metal-rich structures. While these asymmetries are seeded during the first seconds of the explosion, their subsequent evolution determines what we eventually observe.
In this talk, I will follow this evolution using multidimensional simulations of a low-mass progenitor, beginning shortly after a neutrino-driven explosion and continuing for three years as the shock travels through the star and into the surrounding circumstellar medium. I will discuss how hydrodynamic instabilities, neutron-star winds, radioactive decay heating, and reverse shocks reshape the expanding ejecta. In particular, radioactive heating inflates metal-rich regions, while interaction with the surrounding medium decelerates and fragments the fastest plumes without completely erasing the large-scale asymmetry established during the explosion. I will also show how the apparent morphology and velocity distribution depend strongly on the observer's viewing direction. These simulations provide a way to connect the physics operating during the first seconds of stellar death to the supernova remnants observed years later.
