Feedback from massive stars – Modelling supernovae in porous photoionized Giant Molecular Clouds

Abstract

Massive stars are born in highly embedded regions within the Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs). Despite their rarity, they inject vast amounts of energy, momentum and metals into the ISM in the form of feedback. This includes photoionization and type II supernovae, both of which are responsible for driving galactic evolutions. But because massive stars are typically surrounded by star clusters and dense filamentary structures, most feedback energy escapes only through the narrow low-density channels that thread through the clumpy GMCs. The departure from being spherical shocks urges the need to develop new feedback sub-grid models that can account for the influence of GMC structures.
In this talk, I will present numerical simulations of feedback in realistic star-forming environments, and demonstrate how the behaviour of supernova outflows varies with the porosity of the parent cloud. From that, I will propose some easily-implementable methods that model the outflow velocities and the mass driven out as a function of cloud compactness (or narrowness of the channels). We argue that the gas structures around the progenitors are also key factors in determining the supernova impact, and should therefore be incorporated in all feedback models.
