Title

Advancements in Gravitational Wave Astronomy and Detectors: Historical Development, Ongoing Progress, and Future Prospects

Speaker

Prof. Takahiro Sawada (Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, the University of Tokyo)

Abstract

Gravitational-wave (GW) astronomy offers a groundbreaking frontier, transcending the constraints of traditional optical/electromagnetic observations, to observe the history and dynamics of the universe. This talk will outline the historical development and future prospects of GW detectors and significant scientific achievements.

The latest observing data acquisition period, O4b, for the ground-based GW detector network, comprising LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration, is set to commence in April 2024. Exciting results are imminent! The talk will also review the performance of the network and of the individual instruments, along with improvements made to the public alert system to enable astronomers to be promptly notified when promising transient GW candidates are identified.
