Title

Symmetry-Driven Synergistic Quantum Materials and Devices Discovery

Speaker

Dr. Hung-Yu Yang (University of California, Los Angeles)

Abstract

Quantum computers have demonstrated superior computational power compared to classical computers in several problems. However, practical applications still require a significant scale-up of present quantum computers. This scaling can greatly benefit from improving quantum interconnects and achieving robust topological quantum computing. To tackle these outstanding challenges, I will show that how the symmetry design can guide us through the vast quantum realm to focus on the promising avenues, and how the synergy provides an effective feedback loop to accelerate new discoveries of quantum materials and devices. Specifically, I will first introduce a group of Weyl semimetals, where I unearthed new Weyl-driven quantum phenomena that emerge because of their unique symmetry property. Next, I will describe how I utilized 2D van der Waals Josephson junction devices as a new tool to characterize topological superconductors, unambiguously pinpointing their symmetry property that is vital to topological quantum computing. Moreover, by harnessing the multiferroicity that survives down to 2D quantum limit in a transition-metal halide, I engineered a stray-field-free 2D supercurrent diode with the device performance enhanced by two orders of magnitude and a potential for quantum interconnects. Finally, I will give a brief outlook and where my research can continue to advance quantum computing by discovering new quantum materials and devices.
