Title
Screening of New Abelian Gauge Forces
Speaker
Dr. Andrey Shkerin (Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Canada)Abstract
New long-range forces mediated by ultralight vector bosons arise in many well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. Large baryonic and leptonic potentials generated by astronomical bodies, such as the Earth, the Sun or a neutron star, amplify the effects from coupling the new gauge boson to the Standard Model. Hence the strength of the coupling is severely constrained by fifth-force and equivalence-principle tests. I will discuss how robust these constraints are if one accounts for back-reaction on the gauge potential sourced by a body from other fields. The back-reaction can make the gauge potential unstable and diminish the force, thereby screening the charge of the source. I will consider two examples of this effect. The first is the Schwinger pair production of neutrinos which are charged under the new leptonic gauge symmetries. The second is the modification of the Coulomb potential in the presence of additional charged scalars. These effects are especially important for searches of new muonic forces with neutron star binaries, since they can both screen the muonic charge of a neutron star and modify its equation of state.
