Title

Neutron Stars as Laboratories: Prospects and Challenges in the Multi-Messenger Era

Speaker

Prof. Sanjay Reddy (Department of Physics & Institute for Nuclear Theory, University of Washington, USA)

Abstract

Neutron stars provide extraordinary laboratories for exploring the behavior of matter under conditions that cannot be reproduced on Earth. Recent advances in multi-messenger astronomy have opened new avenues for probing the properties of matter at extreme densities.

In this talk, I will discuss how the equation of state and the speed of sound in neutron star cores shape their masses, radii, and tidal deformabilities, and what these observables can reveal about the phases of strongly interacting matter. I will highlight why going beyond the equation of state to understand dynamical phenomena and transport processes is essential for uncovering the composition and microscopic properties of dense matter.

Finally, I will explore how advances in our understanding of QCD, together with next-generation gravitational-wave observatories and complementary astrophysical observations, could usher in an era of precision neutron star studies, transforming these remarkable objects into quantitative laboratories for nuclear physics, particle physics, and cosmology.
