Abstract

Neutron stars are compact objects with extremely high densities and strong magnetic fields, and elucidating their internal structure remains an important problem spanning particle physics, nuclear physics, and astrophysics. In such a dense environment, relativistic fermions emerge, and it is known that their chirality plays an essential role in transport phenomena. One of the prototypical examples is the chiral magnetic effect, in which an electric current is generated along the magnetic field. This also induces a density wave propagating along the magnetic field called the chiral magnetic wave.

In this talk, I will discuss gravitational and electromagnetic collective excitations induced by the chiral transport phenomena in neutron stars. In the context of asteroseismology, seismic oscillations and the associated gravitational waves are classified into several oscillation modes according to their physical origins, such as p-, g-, and r-modes. In addition to these conventional modes, I will show that a new type of oscillation mode can appear in the color superconducting phase of the neutron star. I will then turn to the electromagnetic response of magnetized dense matter and demonstrate that the chiral anomaly gives rise to anomalous dynamical screening.
