Title

Berry phase and helical propagation of light and gravitational waves

Speaker

Prof. Kazuya Mameda (Department of Physics, Tokyo University of Science)

Abstract

The geometric phase is a ubiquitous concept in modern physics. In particular, the Berry phase plays a crucial role in understanding the transport phenomena of massless particles. In this seminar, I will present a comprehensive analysis of the relativistic kinetic theory governing chiral fermions, photons, and gravitons, derived rigorously from quantum field theory. This theoretical framework reveals how Berry phases not only contribute to Hall-type effects, but also modify the trajectories of massless particles. I will demonstrate that the helicity of photons and gravitons, under a background gravity, leads to deviations from their classical trajectories, which could be experimentally verified through optical measurements and cosmological observations.
