Probing Subatomic Physics and Gravity through Gravitational Waves from Neutron Star Mergers

Gravitational waves (GWs) provide a unique window into supranuclear matter and strong-field gravity. Accurate gravitational waveforms and refined models of possible electromagnetic counterparts are essential to establish GW asteroseismology. Additionally, a theory-agnostic framework is needed to assess and validate gravity theories, as well as to identify anomalies in GW data. In this talk, I will first discuss how the dynamical tides—arising from oscillation modes of merging neutron stars—affect GW waveforms. Challenges with incorporating low-frequency modes into waveform models and their potential role in flares, starquakes, and magnetorotational instability will also be addressed. In the second half, I will present preparatory modeling for theory-agnostic tests of gravity. We use numerical relativity to predict what happens to the strong self-gravitating systems in a specific beyond-Einstein theory, including the late-inspiral dynamical scalarization, prompt collapse threshold on mass, and ejecta properties. I will conclude by highlighting future uses of these datasets, including developing universal relations for scalarized neutron stars and their application to efficient waveform models.
