Developing a directional Dark Matter detector has been a dream since the search for WIMPs ( Weakly Interacting Massive particles) started end 1980's. There are still many unknowns, and it is impossible to predict the size of the detector that is needed to detector DM, but a directional detector would be a superb signature for the galactic nature of DM, should it exist as WIMP.
The MIMAC collaboration has developed a low pressure gaseous detector equipped with a Micromegas. it has been a long R&D and the observed tracks were measured longer then predicted by the SRIM simulations. We now have a complete understanding of how the detector is working and plan to install a 1m3 detector in the "Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane" in France.
