Title
From ATLAS to FASER and beyond
Speaker
Prof. Hidetoshi Otono (Research Center for Advanced Particle Physics, Kyushu University, Japan)Abstract
Since 2012, I have joined the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Even though enormous effort to find new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, no new particle has been found after the Higgs discovery. I thought this might be because the ATLAS experiment focused on new particles which generate and decay at the interaction point (IP) of the LHC. To overcome this situation, I have explored the possibility of searching for new long-lived particles (LLPs) which travel inside the ATLAS detector together with theorists. Moreover in 2018 a new experiment at the LHC, called FASER experiment, was proposed to CERN with several co-founders to search for new LLPs in MeV-GeV range and also study TeV neutrino interactions. The FASER experiment is situated 480 m downstream of the ATLAS IP aligned with the beam collision axis. Since 2022, LHC Run 3 has been started, where the ATLAS and FASER experiments
have successfully collected data. This achievement also accelerates a future plan called Forward Physics Facility, which would host various experiments serving not only particle physics, but also nuclear physics. I would discuss all these progress in this seminar.
