Nanoscale AC Electroosmotic Flow and the Frequency-Size Scaling Observed beyond the Charge Relaxation Regime

Post Date:2025-08-19

Dr. Chia-Fu Chou’s group, in collaboration with Prof. Leonardo Lesser-Rojas (a TIGP-Nano alumnus) and his team from University of Costa Rica, presents the first observation of AC electroosmosis (ACEO) flow using nanoelectrodes in the MHz range, much higher than previously anticipated and beyond the Debye–Hückel frequency associated with charge relaxation. Despite remaining undetected for over two decades, this result is corroborated by the frequency–size scaling laws derived in this work from the existing ACEO theory. They contextualized these findings within the historical development of electrokinetic phenomena and discuss their implications for the current theoretical framework of ACEO. This work was selected as the issue Cover of Nano Letters (in print).
