Research Activities and Interests:

Basic and applied physics and chemistry of solid surfaces and interfaces.  Behavior of single atoms, molecules and small atomic clusters on solid surfaces, atomic interactions and how this interaction is related to the electronic interaction in the solids, and how surface layer superstructure formation and 2-D phase transition, etc. are correlated to the atomic interactions on the surface.  Energetic of surface atomic Processes.  Atomic structures and atomic reconstruction at surfaces and interfaces.  Atomic layer by atomic layer compositional analysis of surfaces and interfaces.  Surface segregation and impurity cosegregation in alloys. Order-disorder transformation of alloys.  Atomic structures and compositional variations in electronic materials such as metal-semiconductor layered structures and thin films etc.  Physics and chemistry of small atomic clusters and cluster ions.  Effects of high electric field on surface atoms and use of these effects for atomic manipulations.  Development of a ultra-high resolution pulsed-laser time-of-flight atom-probe field ion microscope and use it to study site-specific binding energy of surface atoms. Particle tunneling phenomena in field ion emission, vacuum tunneling, etc. Field ion microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and other surface analytical techniques.

Major Scientific Work

A major contributor to our atomistic knowledge of the dynamics and the dynamic behavior of surface atoms and clusters on solid surfaces, as well as to field ion microscopy. Further development of field ion microscope and time-of-flight atom-probe field ion microscope techniques, and applying these techniques to study surface phenomena and field ion emission phenomena in atomic details.  The first one to perform an experiment with a specified and strictly controlled number of atoms on a surface, thus different surface atomic processes can be studied separately.  Discovered that interaction between two adsorbed atoms on a metal surface is long-ranged, oscillatory and with a strength of about one tenth of a chemical bond.  Discovered or codiscovered mechanisms of many surface atomic processes such as the atomic-exchange mechanism and a two-step atomic exchange mechanism of surface diffusion and surface alloying, etc. on fcc metal (001) surface.  Discovered many effects of high electric field on surface atoms and ions such as the directional walk of adatoms and field dissociation of compound ions, and the use of some of these effects to atomic scale surface modifications and atomic manipulations.  First direct observation of molecular dynamics of oxygen molecules and hydrogen atoms and Si magic clusters on silicon (111)-7x7 surfaces. Studied many electronic and size effects in growth of quantum islands and in structure phase transition of nano islands.
