Studies of statistical properties of genomes as texts of four letter reveal that they have prominent universal signatures. Numerical analysis shows that these signatures suggests a model for the evolution of a "universal" genome, where very early on the genome grew mostly by segmental duplication.
The model supports the view that at an early stage of life, before the rise of codons and proteins, there was an RNA world, where DNA/RNA played the dual roles of genotype and phenotype.

The field of electrodynamics constitutes the foundation for physics research as well as providing a guide to infrastructure building. In this talk, we discuss two interesting exercises of the latter application: the RF system for Taiwan's synchrotron radiation light source and millimeter-wave vacuum electron beam devices for national defense systems. For each subject, we begin with an electrodynamics examination of the underlying principles, followed by a review of the requisite technology development. Student roles and educational aspect of the projects are emphasized.

網格技術(Grid Technology)預估將成為本世紀初影響最深遠的資訊技術。其主要概念為結合分散的電腦運算資源、儲存裝置以及其他各類型資訊系統,構成虛擬的整合應用環境。研究人員利用網格技術所創造的共享虛擬組織以突破空間障礙,彈性建立各種議題、有效的合作機制,並解決更大尺度的e-Science問題。過去幾年來,網格運算逐漸受到學術研究社群的注意,高能物理、生物資訊以及數位典藏等領域皆積極探究網格技術的應用,以期更有效率地進行資料的蒐尋、整合、分析及儲存。

在實際應用上,高能物理學界率先積極發展網格技術,其中尤以CERN的LCG計劃規模最龐大。期望建構一全球性的網格運算架構與合作機制,確保資料有效率之儲存、管理、模擬、重構、傳佈以及分析。而相較於高能物理學界的積極投入,生物資訊專家則正發展生物網格技術(BioGrid),以探究並解決長久以來生物學中所面臨到大量科學運算及資料儲存的挑戰。近來,國際重要資訊大廠皆對網格運算產生濃厚的興趣,並積極參與Grid架構的建立與應用軟體的開發,相信未來商業趨勢將因網格技術的加入而產生重大變革。

9月18日 章文箴 博士 中央研究院物理研究所 Pentaquark Surprise - Recent observation of 5-quark resonance at SPring-8/LEPS experiment
The SPring-8/LEPS experiment observed a 5-quark KN resonance, named as \Theta^+, produced in the photon-neutron intercations. Only 2-quark mesons and 3-quark baryons were identified experimentally in the past 30 years before this Pentaquark surpise, even though hadrons composed of 5 quarks are not excluded by the quark model. This result has triggered tremendous theoretical discussions.

In this talk, I will first give a brief introduction of hadrons in the quark model and then fouce on the observation of 5-quark KN resonance in the SPring-8/LEPS experiment where the nuclear experimental group of IPAS participate. Finally the current theoretical speculation and interpretation of this exotic state and an outlook of urgent experimental efforts will be summaried.

10月30日 馬遠榮 教授 國立東華大學物理系 Low-Dimensional Nanostrutures: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications
Since hollow one-dimensional carbon nanotubes synthesized by the electric-arc physical deposition methods were discovered, numerous one-dimensional nanostructured materials, such as carbides, silicon nitride, gallium nitride, germanium nitride, copper sulphide, tungsten, zinc oxide, gallium oxide magnesium oxide, and Molybdenum oxide have been produced by various physical and chemical deposition methods. In this talk the synthesis of one-dimensional WO2 nanorods using a vaporized chemical reaction method, and intend a growth mechanism at argon atmosphere is introduced. The crystalline structure of the one-dimensional WO2 nanorods was identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods, and their chemical composition and optical properties were analyzed by energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the atomic force microscope (AFM) tip-induced local anodic oxidation on a native SiO2 layer and an anodic-oxidized SiOx layer, which is in contact mode, is presented in an ambient way.

11月20日 王子敬 博士 中央研究院物理研究所 Recent Results in Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics
Important experiments on atmospheric, solar, accelerator and reactor neutrinos in the past five years produce strong evidence of neutrino masses and mixings. The much-cherished Standard Model of Particle Physics will have to be modified. In this general-level talk, I will share with the audience this exciting story as well as the future directions. Technical details will be omitted to enable non-experts to appreciate this significant advance in basic science. About one-third of the talk will be devoted to the AS-based and led TEXONO program and, in particular, our research activities on reactor neutrino physics at the Kuo-Sheng Nuclear Power Plant -- the first particle physics experiment in Taiwan. The history, achievement and plans will be reported.

In this talk, we will review the offects of sheer flow on the liquid crystals. Shear induced isotropicnematic transition ( Shear banding) will be discussed, where the interface plays an important role. The flowing smectic phase will be analysed, where the defect lines motion control the flow proferty.
12月25日 陳永忠 教授 東海大學物理系 The search of Resonating Valence Bond state in the strongly correlated
systems
In the early days of the invention of high-temperature superconductors (HTSC), the resonating valence bond (RVB) theory proposed by P. W. Anderson has been the most promising one to describe the phase diagram and many anomalous properties of HTSC. However, recent numerical studies of the low-energy properties of the so-called t-J model for HTSC show severe suppression of pairing correlation, which casts the doubt of the RVB theory for HTSC. In this talk we will present a more extensive search of the RVB state in the strongly correlated systems. It is found that the frustrated Heisenberg model in the square lattice can be a good candidate to realize this state. We will discuss the possibility of doping holes into the frustrated system to make it superconducting.
