Title

Effect of graphene oxide on poly(ethylene oxide)-induced turbulent drag reduction

Speaker

Dr. Hyoung Jin Choi (Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, Inha University)

Abstract

A new kind of turbulent drag reducing agent with a mixture of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and graphene oxide (GO) complex material was introduced into a turbulent flow using a rotating disk apparatus. While the presence of interaction between PEO molecules and GO particles was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and X-ray diffraction pattern, turbulent drag reduction (DR) tests were carried out with different PEO and GO concentrations, finding that their DR showed strong dependence on the concentrations of both PEO and GO. The time-dependent DR and relative DR efficiencies were fitted with empirical equations and rheological characteristics of PEO and PEO-GO complex were compared. Results showed that the addition of appropriate amount of GO can enhance the drag reduction performance and improve the resistance to mechanical degradation of PEO, although the GO by itself did not provide turbulent drag reduction efficacy, indicating that the complex interaction between PEO and GO plays an important role.
