Title
Hydrodynamic theory of bacterial aggregates
Speaker
Dr. Hui-Shun Kuan (Dept. Biology, Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany)Abstract
Cellular aggregates are common in many biological settings, ranging from bacterial biofilms to organoids and tumors. The dynamics of these systems is intrinsically non-equilibrium and driven by individual bacterium through complicated biochemical interactions. In this talk, we build the hydrodynamics model to study the bacterial aggregates driven by pili--pili interaction, which is motivated by {\it{Neisseria gonorrhoeae}} biofilm, and excluded volume interaction. Starting from the phase separation phenomenon we can describe the process of aggregate formation with a single bacterial type and identify the physics of the coalescence between two aggregates. In addition, within the same framework we can describe demixing process of two bacterial types in full agreement with experimental observations. This general hydrodynamic model offers a way to study the effects from the material properties and to understand some complicated biological pattern formation.
