Title
Hunting for Gravitational Wave Sources
Speaker
Masaomi Tanaka博士 (日本國立天文台) Dr. Masaomi Tanaka (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan(NAOJ))Abstract
Direct detection of gravitational wave (GW) signals marked the dawn of GW astronomy. One of the most important next steps is conclusive identification of the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. In this talk, I will review expected EM signals from neutron star mergers. It is known that neutron star mergers eject material into interstellar space, and rapid neutron capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis takes place in the ejected material. Then, EM emission, in particular in the optical and near-infrared wavelength, is powered by radioactive decays of newly synthesized r-process nuclei. Therefore, we can study the cosmic origin of r-process elements, such as gold and platinum, by observing such emission. I will present the current status of EM follow-up observations of GW sources and show some latest results.
