簡要記述(中):繼1987年發現超過絕對溫標77度的YBa2Cu3O7- 超導體之後,物理研究所的超導體研究團隊於2008年再度創新發現一種結構更簡單、更安全無毒、更容易製造的「鐵基超導體」(FeSe),提供高溫超導研究新材料。超導領域科學家一直認為,只有像銅氧化物這類反鐵磁絕緣體才能成為高溫超導體,而最近發表的這種氧化鉛結構的鐵硒化合物「PbO type structure α-FeSe」,目前的超導轉變溫度為絕對溫度30K,再次以精彩的實驗,顛覆以往大家深信不疑的高溫超導反鐵磁信仰。以如同當年發現高於液氮溫度的YBa2Cu3O7- 超導體,大大提升超導的應用價值;這次的無毒性鐵化硒超導體的發現,可讓更多團隊很快進入此領域,並且提供了高溫超導理論一個嶄新的發展線索,更進一步邁向室溫超導之夢想。「鐵基超導體(FeAsLaO1-xFx)」首次由東京工業大學細野英夫教授的團隊在2008年初發現[1],推翻磁性材料不可能超導的假設。這個發現具有雙重意義:
一、 銅基超導材料的超導轉變溫度在提高到絕對溫度138 度後已經很難提升,需要另覓其他能在室溫下運作的材料;
二、 鐵的蘊藏量遠高於銅,在所有金屬中居第四位,比銅更容易取得。
不過,細野英夫的新材料具有兩個缺點,一是含高毒性的砷元素,一是材料結構複雜,難以廣泛應用,而中研院發現的新材料則沒有上述問題[2]。目前研究團隊已能把該新材料之超導溫度Tc提升到30K,是全球首次發現不含砷、較無毒性的鐵基化合物高溫超導材料。

簡要記述(英):Prof. Maw-Kuen Wu’s group, at the AS-IOP, discovered that the iron selenide (FeSe) compound with tetragonal symmetry showed superconducting transition at 8 K. This compound is a member of the new Fe-based superconductor family, which was discovered last year that showed relatively high transition temperature. The crystal structure of iron selenide is the simplest among all member of Fe-based superconductors. It provides a direct probe of the correlation between observed superconducting properties with the crystal structure. Detailed structural investigations of this new compound showed that a low temperature distortion, from tetragonal to monoclinic symmetry as shown in the figure, is directly correlated with the occurrence of superconductivity.
